After nearly three months at sea or in quarantine, the last cruise ship of the more than 400 caught in March by the coronavirus pandemic has returned to its home port, Bremerhaven, Germany, allowing the last eight cruise passengers to return home.
MS Artania, operated by Phoenix-Reisen, had the bad luck to take on a passenger in Sydney, Australia, who turned out to be infected. After weeks of quarantine, most passengers were airlifted to various countries, but the ship was unable to find ports for the rest, and headed on the long trip to Germany.
The ship finally left Australian waters on April 18, making stops in Indonesia and the Philippines to drop off crew members. Seventy-five crew members and the eight passengers debarked in Germany. The ship, built in 1984 as Royal Princess for Princess Cruises, is scheduled for an overhaul at a shipyard in Emden.
