Hong Kong calls off New Year fireworks

After six months and more of real-life fireworks, Hong Kong has called off the famous New Years’ Eve fireworks show over Victoria Harbor. The Hong Kong Tourism Board said the decision was made because of security concerns.

Instead of the big show with its countdown and crowds, there will be a ‘Symphony of Lights’ multimedia light show that will include projections on the city’s tallest buildings at midnight; the facade of the Convention Center will be transformed into a huge digital countdown clock.

The events of the past few months, which started with protests over an extradition bill that has now been withdrawn have escalated into a showdown between China’s central government and Hong Kong residents who want to hold on to their special status.
