How to Protect your RV When Not in Use

Do you intend to park your RV for a while? It may be due to weather or you may be busy with other things. So now, you are looking for where to park your RV for the time being.  You are also looking for ways on how to better protect your RV.

You’ve come to the right site. Read on to know how you can protect your RV.

Buy Caravan Covers

Having a caravan cover is a must if you intend to park your car for a longer period. It is best to get a weatherproof caravan cover.   You can easily buy ready-made ones.

Prices vary, from $300 up to about $1800. The price depends on the quality, materials, and other features.  The cheaper the price the fewer features.  A higher price gives you better features.

The sample features are UV resistance and air ventilation ports. Other features are zips or Velcro panels that can give access to doors and windows. For areas experiencing hail, an additional feature to consider is an inner-foam liner.

Higher priced caravan covers are usually the more quality ones. Given that, expect that they will also last longer. These usually have better stitching and corner reinforcement. These make it more durable. The higher-end ones also offer better UV light resistance. Warranty can also be up to seven years.

If you are constrained with the budget, there are also other lower-priced caravan covers. You can opt for a cover that has UV protection but without a thick under-cover foam.  It may not be the best option to protect against hail. But it can still help protect against falling objects.

However, for lower quality covers, you might see degradation after a year of constant UV exposure. Anyway, you can always opt to buy and replace it after a year with a new one.

Get Tailor-made Caravan Covers

You can also opt to have tailor-made caravan covers. It can be using UV laminated polyethylene fabric. The inner layer can use a very soft foam.  This way, it can better provide impact protection from debris and hail. It can also help protect RV against falling branches and fruits. As the cover is soft inside, you can use the cover for a long period. It will not scratch the body of your RV.

One advantage of tailor-fit caravan cover is that it considers the different protrusions. These are awnings, radio, and TV antennae. It can also be the roof-mounted air conditioners.  Spare wheels may also protrude.  Hence, to cover all these protrusions well, a tailor-fit caravan cover is a good idea.

Get the Right Size

Whether you choose to buy a ready-made or tailor-fit caravan cover, you have to measure your RV.  To ensure the best fit for your RV, you have to get the right dimensions. The task is simple. Usually, caravan covers follow the standard height and width of RVs.

Thus, you only need to measure correctly the width and length of your RV. As a tip, measure the RV’s body parallel to the ground.  Measure from the rearmost to the foremost point of the RV’s body.  In measuring, include the bumper and spare tire.

If your RV's dimensions fall in between sizes, it is safer to get the next bigger size. Just use snaps to adjust fit, as necessary.  This way, you can have a snug fit for your RV.

Quality matters

There are many choices in buying a caravan cover. If you can afford it, choose a high-quality caravan cover.  In the long run, it will save you costs. The cheaper ones may not last long. They can rip or tear apart easily. They can also fade away in less than a year, especially if exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Keep batteries charged

In parking your RV for a long time, you have to still keep your batteries charged.  Newer caravans have one or more roof-mounted solar panels. These can charge one or two AGM batteries.  These batteries can keep some electronics running.

When the solar panels are covered, they cannot give the trickle charge to keep electronics running. This can be a problem given the area where your RV may be parked.

To address this, you can chain a small solar panel to the A-frame. It should be at least a 60W solar panel that can work under cloudy days.

Another cheaper option is to buy a simple rectangular vinyl tarpaulin. Tie this tightly on your RV.
