One of the world's largest cruise ships is being scrapped without ever setting sail, much less carrying passengers. It's all part of the complicated collapse of parts of the Hong Kong based Genting empire.
The ship, unnamed but often referred to as Golden Dreams 2, was being built in Germany at the MV Werften shipyard, owned by Genting and was destined for Dream Cruises, another Genting company. A sister ship, Golden Dreams, was almost 80% complete at the time of the collapse and liquidators still hope to sell it to be completed at another shipyard.
The Genting collapse also took with it Crystal Cruises, Star Cruises and a number of other operations, but not the gambling-based operations that were financially separate. The two Golden Dreams ships are just a tad smaller than Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships, but were designed for 9,000 passengers each, about a third more than the Oasis ships.
