Hunt for Nazi treasure train gets serious

Polish soldiers clearing the area of mines

After 70 years of rumors about a treasure-laden train hidden in Poland by retreating German armies, authorities may (they hope!) be close to finding the truth.

With help from the Polish Mining Academy, the two treasure hunters who announced earlier this year that they had found traces of the train hidden in a tunnel, will now attempt to locate it, using high-tech devices including ground-penetrating radar, thermo-cameras and magnetometers. Polish military units prepared the way last month, by combing the area to clear it of unexploded mines and to remove dense thickets.

Koper, who says he and his partner are entitled to 10% of anything found, moved to the area in Lower Silesia 13 years ago, and at first didn’t believe the stories about the hidden train. He says it is likely that none of the intelligence services and government agencies that had searched before found it because they did not have the kind of equipment that’s available now. They expected to find tunnels…but the train was a surprise.
