Inspired by Ice Hotels, SandCastle Hotels Make Debut in the Netherlands

 

Two Sand Hotels opened in Oss and Sneed, the Netherlands, the sites of annual sand sculpture festivals. They got the idea from the Ice Hotels of Sweden and Finland. Like the Ice Hotels, the Sand Hotels are seasonal. The Sand Hotels though, are built for summer. They are torn down at the end of summer to be built again next year.

 

The rooms are built with wooden panels and then covered with sand for safety reasons.  And the sand is treated with a special lime to help it bind and harden to prevent the rooms from crumbling.
