In a move that's said to be for environmental reasons, the Dublin Airports Authority is doubling the price of the Plane Water it sells from its 'honesty stands,' at Dublin and Cork airports.
The stands offer travelers the chance to grab a 500 ml bottle of, well, plain water and drop €1 in a collection box rather than paying higher prices at airport concessions and restaurants. The system has been in place since 2012, and reportedly about 94% of those who take water pay.
But now the bottles are being replaced paper 'Tetra Pak' containers that avoid the new rules requiring a deposit on plastic bottles—but the price of the new packages is pegged at €2 for the same amount of water. Plastic bottles can still be purchased, with a deposit, from shops in the airport.
DAA says that the move will remove 4 million plastic bottles in circulation at our airports thus reducing our carbon footprint in line with our sustainability goals." A spokesman also said that "At €2, our 500ml cartons remain the cheapest water available to purchase at the airport. We also offer water for free to all passengers from the hugely popular hydration stations located throughout T1 and T2 at Dublin Airport and also in the terminal at Cork Airport.”
