Is Germany losing its taste for meat?

Germans are thought of as big meat-eaters—their annual per capita consumption is about twice what German nutritionists recommend—but there appears to be a trend to eating less meat. Slightly less, anyway.

Continuing a trend that started in 2011, consumption of meat has been trending down, although the average consumption is still around 59 kg per person. The German Society for Nutrition recommends no more than about 30 kg per person.

The trend isn’t directly represented in production figure; 2016 was a record year, with 8.28 million tonnes produced, while per capita consumption was dropping, but the population was rising. For 2017, however, both consumption and production dropped, with production going down 2%.
