Italy giving away castles and villas...with a catch

Italy is offering 103 historic buildings, including castles, villas and schools, free of charge to individuals or groups that will agree to restore them and open them as tourist facilities, such as hotels, restaurants or spas.

It's part of the Strategic Tourist Plan of the State Property Agency and Ministry of Cultural Heritage, and aims to turn the properties to good use, while creating new attractions to take the strain off the most popular areas.

All of the buildings are 'off the beaten path' of heavy traffic, but none are without potential. Of the 103, 44 are along historic or religious walking routes, and 59 are spotted along cycle paths.
