Italy hits Ryanair with cancellation fines

Italy has hit Ryanair with €1.85 million in fines for violations last fall, when the discount airline cancelled thousands of flights because of management and staffing failures.

Ryanair was forced to cancel the flights when it found it miscalculated pilot and staff days off.  Over 20,000 flights were cancelled, affecting 315,000 customers.

AGCM, Italy's competition authority, says the fine is based on Ryanair's failure to properly notify customers of changes, and failure to notify them of compensation they were entitled to, offering instead just a choice of refund or rebooking.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
