Al-Attarine Madrasa, Fez, Morocco

This madrasa – or Islamic school – dates back to the 14th century and is situated very close to Fez’ spice and perfume market, from which it derives its name.

It is not very large, but its courtyard is beautifully decorated.

The shots below demonstrate the intricacy of some of the work.

Unfortunately, the sun was in the wrong position for taking good photos of the other side of the courtyard.

The madrasa is an oasis of peace and tranquility. As soon as you walk back out through the wooden doors you return to the frenzied hustle and bustle of the souk.

Definitely a lot nicer than the schools I attended!  But then again, we had more than one book in our library….

Thanks for sharing these lovely photos, Professor!
