Japan's famed 'bullet trains,' the super-speed trains that 50 years ago were the world's first, have finally reached the northern island of Hokkaido, via an undersea tunnel.
The new routes, which cut as much as a quarter off times between Tokyo and Hakodate, are expected to bring new traffic, population and development, just as they have to other areas. Other recent expansions, and their hoped-for effects were reported in a blog HERE on TravelGumbo last week.
