JetBlue: More space for bags, less for knees

JetBlue is redoing the cabins of its fleet of A320s, squeezing in 12 more seats but adding more room in overhead bins. The change-over will take place over the next three years.

The airline is popular in part because it offers more legroom than its competitors, both budget and mainline. It's not clear how much of the extra will have to go to fit in two more rows of seats in the single-aisle planes.

The new cabins, reflecting recent changes in design, are lighter and brighter-looking, and feature 'mood' lighting and larger video screens. Overhead bins have been redesigned to be squarer, and with the lids not rotating inward. That change creates about 40% more space. The airline surveyed passengers for months to determine what's actually being stowed there.
