During the Industrial Revolution - circa 1800 - these man made canals served as the highways of England. Raw goods from America. Cotton, Timber and Tobacco were landed in Liverpool and distributed across the land to be worked into saleable goods. Canal barges were used on the canals and many would need to go up hill to their destination in the mountains of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The barges were elevated through a series of locks and would elevate thousands of feet.
