Guimaraes, located in the northern Portugal district of Braga, is known as the birthplace of the nation. The city was the medieval territory of the Portuguese Dukes who declared the independence of Portugal in the mid-12^th century. Spain finally recognized Portugal as a separate kingdom in 1143.

This day I was able to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site; its historic landmarks and narrow streets lined with centuries old buildings. I was on an optional shore excursion offered by Viking River Cruises as I sailed on the Douro River. It was a thrill to explore the city’s medieval heart; its preservation a testament to its importance and an acknowledgement to this time in Portuguese and Renaissance history.
