One of the most spectacular and elaborate churches in the Maritimes is St. Dunstan's Basilica in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island.
The current church was built by Quebec architect Francois-Xavier Berlinguet in 1896-1907. The interior suffered extensive fire damage in 1913 and was redesigned and rebuilt in a more English-inspired idiom by architect J. M Hunter.
St. Dunstan's is the center Roman Catholic church on Prince Edward Island and was elevated to the status of Basilica in 1929. In 1990, Canada designated St Dunstan's a National Historic Site citing it's fine example of High Victorian Gothic Revival architecture.
I've seen the Basilica three times so far, once in beautiful sunny weather. To me, like much of Prince Edward Island, the Basilica is best appreciated in wonderful weather. I can see why people come to P.E.I. in July and August when you're more likely to get those days.
