June in Spain: Festivals all over

June begins summer, and Spain will host a number of summer-themed events, as well as the annual Madrid book fair, and a 500th anniversary exhibit at the Prado of works by Heironymus Bosch. A portion of his Last  Judgement is above.

Other events include two music festivals in Barcelona, big-time motor racing, religious pilgrimages and a Midsummer Day event on June 23 with dozens of volunteers walking barefoot across a bonfire. That’s actually a day for bonfires and celebrations in many towns…but without the fire walk.

Possibly the oddest event comes near the end, on June 29 in Haro, in the wine-famous Rioja province, when two sides act out a mock battle, drenching each other in thousands of litres of wine.
