Just in time: Report on airline punctuality

The numbers are in, and for North Americans the good news is that while only one American airline made it onto the most punctual list, none are on the list of the 10 worst offenders.

Asian airlines (JAL, ANA and Singapore) took three of the top slots, but 8 other Asian airlines dominated the bottom of the list. Europe got three of the best, including the top two (KLM and Iberia, followed by Austrian) and none of the worst.

Here are the two lists, compiled by FlightStats, showing the percentage of on-time arrivals.

The best 10, from the top on down:

  • KLM (88.53 per cent of arrivals on time)
  • Iberia (88.18 per cent)
  • JAL (87.8 per cent)
  • Qatar Airways (86.34 per cent)
  • Austrian (85.74 per cent)
  • ANA (85.54 per cent)
  • Singapore Airlines (85.45 per cent)
  • Delta Air Lines (85.17 per cent)
  • TAM Linhas Aéreas (85.07 per cent)
  • Qantas (84.3 per cent)

And the least punctual, from the worst to the not-quite-as-bad:

  • Hainan Airlines (30.3 percent of arrivals on time)
  • Korean Air (31.74 per cent)
  • Air China (32.73 per cent)
  • Hong Kong Airlines (33.42 per cent)
  • China Eastern Airlines (35.8 per cent)
  • Asiana Airlines (37.46 per cent)
  • Philippine Airlines (38.33 per cent)
  • Air India (38.71 per cent)
  • Icelandair (41.05 per cent)
  • El Al (56 per cent)

Imagine that: Three airlines whose flights are on time only once out of three!

Photo honors to KLM, which topped the list.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
