Liege's October Fair marks 430 years

Liege's Foire d'Octobre, Belgium's oldest and largest, is underway, continuing until November 11th after an opening parade featuring traditional folklore characters.

Among the features of the fair, established in 1594, are 166 rides and attractions that are expected to draw over a million visitors. While the official date is 1594, it is believed to be a continuation of market fairs that go back as far as the eighth century.

For many, the highlight of the fair is its traditional edible: the Liege lacquement waffle, filled with sugar and drizzled with orange blossom syrup.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
