Lisbon extends tourist tax to cruises

Lisbon, an increasingly popular cruise port, is joining numbers of others in collecting a visitor toll that has previously been applied only to land-based visitors, starting with the new year.

The €2 a day per person fee, modest compared to some, has a €14 cap, and is usually charged through hotel or vacation rental payments. For cruise ships, it will be collected from cruise companies through the Lisbon Port Administration.

The plan was approved last year, but in consultation with the cruise line operators’ organizations it was put off to next year in recognition that most 2023 cruises had already been paid for without accounting for the new rate.
