Water levels in some of Europe’s main river systems are giving river cruisers and operators a hard time again, with low water forcing cancellations and rerouting, especially on the Rhine and Danube.
The dry, hot summer has lowered levels enough to make sailings between Vienna and Budapest on the Danube impossible, and have blocked a number of Rhine cruises, especially in the Rhine Gorge area.
As a result, passengers are being bused between cities on some stretches and then continuing on different vessels; some lines with fewer vessels have had to reroute or cancel cruises. With little rain in sight, the conditions may not change soon.
