A Mount Desert Island campground in Maine is shedding its roughing-it-in-the-woods vibe to become a full-on 'glamping' resort, complete with toilets and coffee-makers inside the roomy permanent tents that are replacing the flapping canvas of yore.
In fact, the former KOA Woodlands site doesn't even call itself a campground anymore; it will be known as the Terramor Outdoor Resort, if you please. The name is intended as a combination of words for 'earth' and 'love.' Opening season is planned for next spring.
The owners, who have scaled the site back from 130 tents to 64 larger ones spaced farther apart, have added a bar and restaurant, as well as a store and equipment rentals, and a guide/concierge. The rebuilt swimming pool is described as 'nature-themed.'
We'll leave the owners to describe what they think they've created, and leave it up to you to see if it resembles any idea you ever had of camping in the woods: "Thoughtfully designed to blend the aesthetics of the surrounding nature with the comforts of an upscale hotel room, the luxury tent accommodations at Terramor bring a new level of refined style to relaxing and recharging in the great outdoors. And, oh yes, there's also a private dog park.
