May 23, 2018: Thomson, Georgia Train Station

While traveling through Georgia we met a friend and had lunch at a restaurant near the Old Georgia Railroad Railway Train Station, formally known as the Thomson, Georgia Train Station Depot. It was quite interesting to check out.

Thomson 2I also found it interesting that it, as well as the city, was name after the person that was the chief engineer of the newly chartered Georgia railroad in 1834. His name was John Edgar Thomson and he was only 26.  He located the road, negotiated and oversaw construction contracts, operated portions as they opened, and promoted possible connections to the north and west. Thomson became nationally known for his expertise.

Thomson 3After a renovation in 1981, the brick-and-granite building housed the local chamber of commerce in the former passenger rooms, while the freight room was used as a community meeting space. A recent rehabilitation project, undertaken between July 2013 and April 2014, included various repairs and restoration work to maintain the structure's historical character.
