Mont Blanc getting more dangerous for climbers

Mont Blanc, already known as a dangerous and difficult peak for climbers, is becoming even more dangerous as climate and weather conditions change and become less predictable. Last month was among the most deadly, with four fatalities and two climbers missing.

The mountain, which spans borders of France, Italy and Switzerland, had eight deaths in 2023 on the tallest peak, while the range, the Mont Blank Massif averages about a hundred deaths a year, mostly from falls, being hit by rocks. Some are also the result of climbers, mostly inexperienced, becoming lost.

By comparison, Mount Everest, which is more than twice the height, has logged 310 deaths in the past thirty years. Most of the Mont Blanc area deaths were inexperienced climbers without a professional guide, but even with a guide, unpredictable melts and rockface changes that come with climate change have made the area more dangerous..

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
