Next weekend will see the biggest Memorial Day travel numbers in a dozen years, according to AAA. The auto club predicts 39.3 million travelers, up by a million, or 2.7%, from last year.
According to an AAA spokesperson, “The expected spike in Memorial Day travel mirrors the positive growth seen throughout the travel industry this year. Higher confidence has led to more consumer spending, and many Americans are choosing to allocate their extra money on travel this Memorial Day.”
Most of the travelers—over 80%—will be on the road, despite slightly higher gas prices than last year. And about 2.9 million more may be on the road for a while: they'll be on the way to the airport. That's an increase of 5.5% over last year.
