Canada will launch North America’s first zero-emission rail service this summer with a train powered by green hydrogen along a route that serves Quebec’s tourism-rich corridor along the Saint Lawrence River from June to September.
Dubbed the Train de Charlevoix, the service will connect the park at Montmorency Falls to the river town of Baie-Saint-Paul, 90 minutes away on the train that is capable of speeds up to 140 mph, and release only steam and water vapor into the atmosphere. The train will also run excursions to local craft breweries along the route.
The world’s first regular service by hydrogen-powered trains was launched in northern Germany last summer. That train, like the Quebec train, is a Coradia iLint, manufactured by Alstom. The UK and India have announced future plans for hydrogen-powered service.
