New night sleeper: North Sea to the Med

European Sleeper, one of the new companies in the newly-competitive market for overnight sleeper trains, is planning a new route for next year that will link Brussels to Venice, with stops at major cities and ski resort areas.

The route, set to start service in February, will run from Brussels through Rotterdam on the North Sea, through Utrecht, Cologne and Munich before heading into ski territory at Innsbruck, Austria and Bolzano, Italy. At the end of the run, it will have stops in Verona and end in Venice on the Mediterranean.

The line will run twice a week in each direction for February and March; plans for after that will depend on whether demand is strong enough when the ski season ends. The train will leave Brussels at 5 p.m. and arrive in Venice 21 hours later at 2 p.m. The return journey will leave an hour later, arriving in Brussels at 11 a.m. Fares have not been set yet.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
