If you believed all the whining about how this airline’s or that airline’s loyalty programs were no longer worth anything…a ring of thieves didn’t, and have turned frequent flier accounts into new targets for thefts.
Both American and United have reported that thieves gained access to the credentials for a number of accounts—American says about 10,000—and used them to log on and book trips. Neither airline is saying how many succeeded, and both are restoring miles that were stolen and tightening up security procedures on accounts.
