New York slot waivers get another year

Airlines serving New York's airports as well as Washington Reagan are getting another year of breathing space in which they will not be required to use all their assigned landing and take-off slots which are usually on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. The FAA's waiver of slot rules has been extended through October 2024.

Citing a shortage of air traffic controllers, the Federal Aviation Administration lifted the rule in April for the summer months and then extended it to next month in hopes that fewer flights with larger planes would help avoid the kinds of cascading delays and cancellations that plagued the area for months, with spillover effects into other destinations.

When the waiver was first announced in April, several carriers trimmed their New York schedules, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines. There has been a general agreement by airlines and regulators that the relief has been effective.

FAA says it's hard at work recruiting and training new controllers, and hopes to be fully-staffed by October 24 at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control center.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
