Next for Cuba: Carnival to offer volunteer cruises

Cuban sunset, soon to be seen from Carnival's volunteer cruises

Carnival's Fathom cruise line will offer "voluntourism" cruises to Cuba starting next spring, it announced today. Although the itineraries haven't yet been fully developed, and the volunteer opportunities haven't been formally arranged yet, tickets are on sale from about $2990 for sailings starting in May.

Carnival announced its Fathom brand a couple of months ago, with initial itineraries built around programs in the Dominican Republic. The Cuba cruises, also using P&O's liner Adonia, will alternate weeks with Dominican cruises. The plan is for 7-day tours, including at least 3 port stops in Cuba.

Carnival has already obtained from the U.S. State and Treasury departments for the plan, required because U.S. travel to Cuba is limited to travelers who fit one of 12 specific categories. The volunteer aspect of the cruises puts them in the people-to-people category. For more detail from CruiseCritic.com, click HERE
