Nov. 16, 2019: Healing Hands, Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s Surgeons Hall is home to both the Royal College of Surgeons, founded in 1505, and a series of medical museums that are an unexpected highlight for many visitors to the city.

This statue, named From Here, Health, is In the College’s courtyard, surrounded by its buildings, old and new. It was created by Denys Mitchell, who managed to get his name on the plaque in the same size letters as the man who pulled off the cover to reveal the statue.

But then, naming rights being what they are, the plaque shares the courtyard with a pleasant wooden bench whose main function appears to be to carry on the name of a now-departed local merchant.
