Walking around the Lower East Side of New York City is a chance to see old stores and restaurants alongside new ones. One of my favorite places to stop is Economy Candy, an old-fashioned candy shop with over 2000 different forms of snacks for sale. There are bins of loose candy sold by the pound, chocolate, candy bars, and specialty candies, all for sale.
Two blocks away from Economy Candy is Katz's Delicatessen. Probably best known for a famous scene in the movie When Harry met Sally is is home to, in the opinion of this traveler, the BEST pastrami sandwich on the planet.
The Lower East Side is also home to several new restaurants, who are taken advantage of an old technology for their signage. They use beautiful stylish neon signs to advertise their presence.
The Lower East Side is not what it used to be. Very few places in New York City are. But it is still worth taking the time to walk around and look at what is there.
