Evora, about an hour and a half drive southeast of Lisbon, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It was an important Roman fortification, complete with an old city surrounded by a Roman Wall, with the remains of an aqueduct and an old temple.
Evora has a well-preserved Roman era gate, known as the Queen Isabel Door (Porta de Dona Isabel). It’s part of the Roman wall and through it passed one of the main streets of the old city, the Cardo Máximo.
