The oneworld airline alliance headed by American and BA has a plan to extend its reach by adding affiliated airlines that fill in gaps in oneworld's network, and will provide the smaller airlines with the ability to sell many more routes.
Under the plan, the smaller airlines will each need three oneworld sponsors, who will make up the bulk of the connections to the airline. Fiji Airlines, the first affiliate, is sponsored by four.
For oneworld passengers, the deal will mean more no-baggage-swap connections to more places, and more points-earning opportunities. The affiliated airlines will also be bookable as part of oneworld's round-the-world flight program.
