While Orcas are far from shy, getting decent photos of them is a challenge, as it is with most whales. They move quickly and don’t spend much time near the surface.
I felt fortunate to snap these images of two Orcas from the deck of a nature cruise vessel in Kenai Fjords National Park. The orcas were part of a superpod feasting on the bounty of salmon available in late summer.
The two orcas swam to our ship then dove under the hull and disappeared. The photos are presented in the sequence in which they were taken. For me the encounter was the highlight of that day!
