Paris: Pere Lachaise reopens, with more green

The most famous cemetery in Paris, Pere Lachaise, is fully open to visitors again after two years of pandemic restrictions, but some visitors will find the familiar place less familiar and far greener.

The cemetery's park curator, Benoit Gallot, has spearheaded a drive to  drive to  "re-naturalise" the grounds, allowing dandelions, wild orchids and clover to grow among headstones and on the cobbled paths. In some areas, gravel has been replaced by new lawns. Gallot says the new look is in keeping with tradition, and that every square metre of green contributes to a cooling effect.

Some visitors to the cemetery, known for the many celebrities buried there, are less happy with the idea, and feel that it makes the graves appear neglected. Also, in some cases, the flora may damage graves, not only through falling trees but through root damage, requiring repair. Other visitors have applauded.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
