Portugal restaurants going to the dogs

Portuguese pets will find a new welcome in at least some restaurants and cafes starting in May under a new law that allows them, on leash, in restaurants that declare themselves pet-friendly.

Restaurant owners will now have to post signs setting up the rules. Among the options: limiting numbers of pets, designating specific areas, or opening the whole place (except for food preparation areas).

The law, sponsored by the People-Animal-Nature party and supported by the Greens and the Socialists, does not specify dogs. Cafe owners will have to make their own decisions on what animals are welcome. Guide and assistance dogs will continue to be acceptable in all establishments.

While pet owner and some cafe owners are cheering the rule, there have been complaints by people who either dislike the idea or are concerned about being able to find a place to eat where their animal-related allergies are not triggered.
