Portugal's Algarve adding more bike paths

Portugal's southern Algarve region, home to some of the country's most heavily-touristed beach and vacation areas, is adding miles of new bike paths to make the area more accessible to non-motorized visitors.

One of the latest is under construction now, a 60-kilometer path along the southwest coast, in the municipality of Aljezur, near Faro. It's part of a plan that includes a total of 76 kilometers.

The plan for what it is calling an 'Ecovia' was approved last year; construction has now started and is expected to wrap up within eight months, opening in time for winter vacationers seeking a warmer place than home. The Algarve region is also home to the Algarve Coastal Route, a 235km route combining bike trails, nature trails and low -traffic roads.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
