Tulip growers in the Netherlands are warning of sharp price increases next year because of an expected shortage of bulbs caused by unusually persistent rains this year.
Growers plant small bulbs early and then harvest them to sell at a larger size for planting and blooming, but this year many had to sharply delay the first planting or were unable to at all because of wet ground.
The expected shortage of tulip bulbs is “unprecedented”, Mark-Jan Terwindt director of tulip trader organisation Royal Anthos, told press agency ANP. Prices for cut flowers next year might even triple, growers have warned.
