Reykjavik goes 'lights out' for Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is one of Iceland's biggest tourism attractions, but it keeps its own schedule, and people often have to take tours out of town to be able to see them.

But Wednesday night, with especially good viewing weather expected, city officials asked residents in four downtown districts to turn off their house lights to improved the dramatic natural lighting.

The amazing displays result from from fast-moving, electrically-charged particles emitted by the sun. Aurora activity has been particularly intense in recent days due to a dramatic solar storm.
