River Cruisers: They can't get any longer, so...

European river cruise ships can see endlessly long, but there's a limit: they can't get any longer than the locks on the rivers, or, for that matter the width of the rivers, because then they'd be unable to turn around.

So, Ama Waterways, one of the larger cruise lines, has found a different way to go bigger, building two new ships that are twice as wide as the usual. The new ships, arriving in 2019, will be 22 meters wide, but have about the same number of passengers, allowing for bigger cabins, multiple dining rooms and other added amenities.

While many smaller ports have ships double up at the docks (with passengers on the far ship using the near ship as a walkway), AmaMagna and its future sister ship won't be able to do that.

The hull is being built in Serbia, and will be finished and furnished in Holland. While others can make that trip through Europe's inland waterways, this one will have to travel on the deck of a freighter from the Black Sea and through the Mediterranean.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
