A series of recent incidents, including one involving a spectacular dive from the upper levels of the Trevi Fountain has led Rome officials to think about new restrictions to keep the city's fountains free of swimmers and waders.
Local politicians are saying “the time has come to restrict access to the Trevi fountain,” in the words of Rome's Tourism Councillor, who said the incident was “yet another tourist making a mockery of the historical and cultural heritage of our city and our rules.”
Those rules apparently did not apply in 1960, when Federico Fellini filmed La Dolce Vita, featuring Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni in the Trevi.
The diver, by the way, turned out to be not a visitor, but a local who has been fined for such stunts before. This time, he was fined €450. No one, apparently, attempted to stop him; instead dozens of visitors filmed the episode with their phones.
