Santa Catalina Island, often called Catalina Island, or just Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. state of California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of Los Angeles, California. The highest point on the island is 2,097 feet (639 m) Mt. Orizaba. Santa Catalina is part of the Channel Islands of California archipelago and lies within Los Angeles County. Santa Catalina Island's total population in the 2010 census was 4,096 people, 90 percent of whom live in the island's only incorporated city, Avalon. The second center of population is the unincorporated village of Two Harbors at the island's isthmus.
I have had the good fortune of visiting Newport Beach in the past, but I never had the opportunity to see many sunsets from the resort I usually stay at, for my family and I are usually busy visiting with friends or sightseeing throughout the Los Angeles County area. Similarly, I have found that seeing Santa Catalina Island clearly from Newport Beach is a rarity, for it is usually partially or entirely concealed by fog; However, one lovely California evening my family and I had just checked in and were settling into our rooms when my brother looked out the window and said "Wow...look at that sunset! And you can see all of Catalina Island!" With the sun quickly dipping below the horizon, we all scrambled to get our cameras and ran out onto the balcony to enjoy this beautiful Santa Catalina Island sunset. I hope you enjoy it to.
