Seattle: Now, appointments for screening line

Seattle's SeaTac airport is trying out a new system that allows passengers to book time-specific spots for security scanning, eliminating the wait in long lines and potentially allowing better social distancing.

The reservation system, or 'virtual queuing' is being marketed as SEA Spot Saver, and allows passengers to sign up 24 hours in advance. They'll receive a QR code that can be shown at the designated line at the time. In a second option at one of the gates, it will be possible to enter 'party size' and make a group reservation.

The test program, which runs through August 31 during the terminal's busiest hours each day, is free to try, but so far only for Alaska Airlines passengers, since it is on lines that feed Alaska's gates. It's one of TSA's responses to the issue of long slow-moving security lines.

Those lines may be back soon; in fact in some hotspots such as Orlando they have already returned. Anticipating a continued revival in business, TSA is working on hiring 6,000 new agents.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
