September 28, 2016: London Bridge – Lake Havasu, AZ

A while back we spent a long weekend in Lake Havasu and had a great time. Besides seeing the lake, the thing I wanted to see the most was the London Bridge. Not only do I love bridges, but Its history seemed so fascinating.  It was built in the 1830s and formerly spanned the River Thames in London, England. It was dismantles in 1967 and relocated to Arizona.  What was interesting was that the owner who bought the bridge, Robert P. McCulloch, had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America, then put them back together in its current location in Lake Havasu.  What a project that must have been. On September 23rd 1968 the foundation stone was re-laid and the bridge was completed slightly over three later on October 5th, 1971.

London Bridge 2We weren’t staying very far from the bridge so we made a point of getting up early each morning before it got too hot and walk across the bridge and look at the amazing lake and all the boaters out and about. It made me wish my sister and brother-in-law were there with their boat. It would have been so nice to be out on the water. Maybe some other time. I still had fun walking around and taking pictures of this amazing piece of art that was literally put back together piece by piece. Definitely make sure to take a nice stroll across the London Bridge when you are in Lake Havasu.
