Six Flags adds scary VR to roller coasters

Warning: your correspondent is coaster-phobic, and will NOT be doing any first-person reviews of what thousands of enthusiasts are about to experience: Six Flags is adding virtual reality to some of its roller coasters, so that you can join up with Superman in "an actual, stomach-churning 221-foot drop...loaded with bone-crushing G-forces."

That's only a sample of the purple prose from Six Flags' design director. Six Flags has redesigned three of its coasters with headsets and VR technology so that riders will accompany Superman on a crazed flyover of Metropolis in pursuit of Lex Luthor. That one will be at Six Flags New England, Six Flags America in Maryland and Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio.

In the other VR storyline, based on Independence Day, the riders, rather than Will Smith, save the planet from annihilation. That one will be running at Six Flags Over Texas, Dallas; Six Flags St. Louis; Six Flags Over Georgia; La Ronde in Montreal, and Great Escape, New York. All will be in operation by late March, and all will offer the VR experience as an add-on; riders can opt for just the conventional scary ride.

USA Today has published an article with more detail on what the experience will feel like. If you can take it...click HERE
