Sea otters were once highly endangered because of overhunting for their amazingly soft pelts (which have the densest hair count of any animal). They've recovered and there are now thousands of them living off the coast of Alaska. Sea otters are also remarkable because they live their entire lives in the water, like whales and dolphins.
We came across this little fellow floating and sleeping on his back in Kodiak's busy fishing harbor. We were able to get within 10 feet of him -- a rare close approach to what are usually shy creatures.
