Spanish beach town: We’re banning almost everything!

Bad behavior on Spanish beaches has become a recurring issue for many towns and even more headlines, but San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia has carried its response to extremes.

A new set of rules and fines seems to range from reasonable (no hogging beach spots) to the unenforceable (no urinating in the ocean) to the ridiculous (no playing ball games). The new rules, which take effect today, include bans on

  • nudity
  • playing music
  • ball games and even urinating in the sea.
  • attempting to reserve a spot on the beach with a towel.
  • lighting fires or barbeques on the beach
  • selling cold drinks and snacks without a permit
  • cycling along the town’s promenade
  • urinating in the ocean.
