Spirit keeps the pressure on legacy carriers

Spirit strikes again…this time with more non-stops from Philadelphia

The ultra-low-cost carrier is taking on JetBlue and American this time, with non-stops from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale and Detroit.

The Spirit “bare-fare” services that it hopes will win it market share competing with the majors on high-density has already pushed all three of the big legacy carriers—Delta, United and American—into offering no-frills fares in competition. (For Gumbo’s coverage of that story, click HERE)

Besides Fort Lauderdale and Detroit, Spirit recently announced non-stop service from Philly to Los Angeles. Other routes include Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas and Atlanta.

Perhaps we’re seeing the beginning of a real fare war on high-density routes?
