Spotted on the Road: 1955 Ford Thunderbird

My brother and I spotted the above car on the Sea to Sky Highway while traveling from Vancouver to Whistler.  It's obviously a very sporty car and a sharp color.

It's a 1955 Thunderbird, produced the first year the model was made.  Ford created the T-bird to compete with Chevy's launching of the Corvette a few years earlier.  The T-bird turned out to be a very popular vehicle, with around 16,000 produced that year (as opposed to less than a thousand for the Corvette).

This 2-seat car was entirely original.  The roof is fiberglass and removable and came with a cart on which to store it (obviously can't be done when the car is moving).  Much of its trunk was occupied by the spare tire, which in future production years was placed above the rear bumper.
